New Cat® Technology Boosts Safety and Productivity for Medium Wheel Loaders
Technology Highlights
- Collision Warning System with Motion Inhibit – actively prevents reverse movement from a stationary machine.
- Cat® Payload for Trade – integrates certified scale data directly into business processes.
- Availability – applicable to Cat 950 through 982 wheel loaders, including XE models.
IRVING, Texas, May 6, 2025 – Next generation Cat® medium wheel loaders are now equipped with advanced technologies that improve safety, accuracy, and operational efficiency. These updates are available as optional upgrades and fully integrate into the machines’ performance systems.
New Technology Options
Caterpillar announces new options for Cat 950, 962, 966, 966 XE, 972, 972 XE, 980, 980 XE, 982, and 982 XE wheel loaders. The Collision Warning System with Motion Inhibit includes:
- Object Detection
- People Detection
- Motion Inhibit
This system enhances safe operation by detecting hazards and inhibiting movement when transitioning from inactive to active states. Frank Stadelmann, Caterpillar’s Global Product Application Specialist, stated the system boosts operational awareness and reduces risk.
Operating Safety Enhancements
Starting with a standard HD rear camera and touchscreen, additional safety tech includes:
- Multiview (360°) Vision System
- Rear Object Detection
- Collision Warning with radar and vision sensors
The system categorizes proximity alerts into zones (yellow, amber, red) and automatically inhibits reverse motion when critical objects or people are detected. Motion Inhibit also applies the brake and notifies operators through in-cab alerts.
People Detection System
Using smart camera vision, the system highlights detected individuals with red bounding boxes and adjusts alert levels based on proximity.
Cat® Payload and Scale Integration
Standard Cat Payload delivers on-the-go weighing, while Advanced Payload adds:
- Automatic tip-off assist
- Multitask mode for dual loading processes
- Split mode for multi-body loading with cumulative tracking
Cat Payload for Trade* is type-approved for legal metrology in Europe, enabling certified weight data integration into business systems.
Productivity & Efficiency Features
- Auto Set Tires – improves digging technique and fill factors
- Autodig – automates dig cycle initiation
- Programmable Kickouts – reduces repetitive movements
- Speed Limit Control – two programmable top speed options
- Tire Pressure Monitoring – supports optimal tire maintenance
- Remote Flash – allows software updates via onboard display
- Remote Troubleshoot – connects with Cat dealers for diagnostics
Remote Operation: Command for Loading
This remote-control technology allows operators to control loaders from a distance, via:
- Command Console – line-of-sight remote control
- Command Station – non-line-of-sight operation from remote locations
