Dumpers for hire
Our guide to dumper hire
Site dumpers are one of the most hired machines on any building site. They move soil, hardcore, concrete, sand and rubble quickly and safely, saving hours of barrow work.
Builders, groundworkers, landscapers and civil engineering contractors hire dumpers by the day or week, often alongside a mini digger to load them.
This guide covers the main types of dumper, how to choose the right size and what to check before you hire.
Site dumpers: 1 to 9 tonne payloads
Tracked dumpers: micro to 22 tonne
Tip styles: forward, swivel and high tip
Often hired with: a mini digger or excavator
Hire periods: daily, weekly or longer
Booking: directly with the hire company
Types of dumper
Dumpers come in several styles. The right one depends on what you're moving, where you need to tip it and the ground you're working on.
The classic site dumper. The skip tips forward to unload, making it ideal for moving spoil and materials around open sites.
The skip turns up to 180 degrees, so you can tip to the side into trenches or along roads without repositioning.
The skip lifts before tipping, letting you unload into skips, containers and over walls.
Rubber tracks spread the load on soft or uneven ground, from micro tracked dumpers for gardens to large machines for civils.
Self-loading dumpers with a shovel-style skip that scoops up its own load, saving labour on smaller jobs.
Choosing a dumper
When choosing a dumper for hire, there are several factors to consider:
Match the payload to the job. A 1 tonne dumper suits tight domestic sites, while 6 to 9 tonne machines move bulk material on larger projects.
Measure gates and paths. Micro tracked and 1 tonne dumpers fit through narrow openings that larger machines can't.
On soft, wet or sloping ground, consider a tracked dumper for better grip and lower ground pressure.
Operators should be trained and competent. Check the seatbelt and roll-over protection, and carry out daily checks before use.
FAQs
For garden and domestic work, a 1 tonne or micro tracked dumper is usually enough. For building sites and groundworks, 3 tonne dumpers are popular, and 6 to 9 tonne dumpers suit larger earthmoving jobs.
On private sites, operators must be trained and competent, and many sites ask for a recognised card such as CPCS or NPORS. Driving a dumper on public roads has extra rules. See our guide to UK dumper road licence requirements.
Wheeled dumpers are faster on firm ground and haul roads. Tracked dumpers are better on soft, muddy or sloping ground and cause less damage to lawns and finished surfaces.
Rates depend on the size of the dumper, how long you need it, delivery and your location. Weekly hire is usually better value than daily. Use our plant hire cost calculator to estimate your costs, then compare listings.
Carry out a daily pre-use check of tyres or tracks, brakes, steering, lights, the seatbelt and the skip mechanism. Download our free dumper checklist.
